IMF Praise India’s Efforts On Economic Reforms

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) praised India’s management of its economy considering global uncertainties. Christine Lagarde, IMF’S Managing Director, who is on a visit to India, said the multilateral agency is keen on implementing quota reforms, that would provide more voting rights for emerging nations including India and China and that change was definitely in the air. The IMF chief described India’s expected growth rate of 7% next year as “significant” but reminded that the state of the global economy is still fragile. She warned that supply disruptions from Iran could push global crude prices by up to 30% and this rise in prices could have serious consequences on the global economy and ill impact particularly the oil importing countries. India heavily depends on import for its crude oil requirement.

Appreciating India’s economic reforms measures Lagarde said, “The decision of government to cap subsidies at 2% of gross domestic product I think that is a very solid anchoring of the role of subsidies.” She added, “We are encourages to see that there is a continued path towards fiscal consolidation, that there is a determination to improve the tax code. There is a determination to cap the subsidies at 2%. All of those measures are good measures.”
