Walmart and Tesco not hurrying to open outlets in India

Tesco and Walmart will  open no stores in India in the near future, although the Minister for Commerce and Industry, Anand Sharma would like to see it. In a meeting in Davos, representatives of the British supermarket giant Tesco met with him and it was reported that certain issues still had to be clarified.

Walmart will also wait for a final decision to open outlets in India until conditions have been agreed upon.

Walmart has already opened cash –and–carry shops, working together with Bharti, the food wholesaler.

A clause for single–brand shops has been removed already. The Swedish furniture company Ikea has now plans to invest in the country.

A number of political parties have announced that in states ruled by them, foreign supermarkets will not be allowed. This means that only states governed by the Congress could qualify for foreign retail companies.

Good news is reported for coffee lovers, as the coffee chain Starbucks announced the expanding of their market in India. Two new outlets are going to open at the India Gandhi International Airport, with more to come in other places.
